The history of Fair Oaks dates back to the 1800s. This town is in the heart of the San Juan District, named after an old Mexican land grant on the north bank of the American River. In 1849, a year after the discovery of gold in Coloma, the land was purchased by miner Fred Cox who later became a senator. In the early 1890s some 6,000 acres of land was purchased from Senator Cox, divided into smaller parcels of land and named Fair Oaks. Since then, this community has become a suburb of Sacramento, but still manages to retain its own individuality.
